OBT feature business Nat’s No Nonsense Plumbing, Toogoolawah
Nat and Nina Granzien’s plumbing business in Toogoolawah started in 2002 as many small family businesses do – initiated by an enthusiastic husband and wife team operating on a micro scale.
Gaining a great reputation for residential plumbing and drainage work, their business blossomed. Nat then got his gas fitter’s ticket and Nina ran an enviable back office.
Early in the piece, Nat and Nina recognised the value of getting professional advice to make sure their business started and stayed on track. A friend recommended that they talk with Brett Garmeister.
“Nat was working in the field and I was looking at running everything from our accounting system, customer service, debtors, creditors and payroll,” says Nina. “Just as anyone would have a qualified contractor see to their plumbing, we decided to do the same when it came to our accounting and tax.”
With Nina working in the office part time, she relies on OBT to help keep their BAS and tax organised. Operating in such a highly-regulated industry, they made sure their super and insurances were covered by Rodney and Kathy. Amanda helps keep their accounting system, Reckon, on course with accurate coding and great user advice.
“OBT is amazing; we have a good chat with Brett each year and whenever something crops us. He is easy to talk to and always willing to help – we can hear him smile down the phone line.”
“The team at OBT crunches all our financial data and Brett steers us in the right direction.”
Nina is the first to admit that she and Nat don’t understand enough about tax and need to surround themselves with proper expertise. Her strategy has allowed the business to steadily grow as a result.
These days, covering the upper branches of the Somerset region from Coominya to Mt Stanley, they now have an additional employee – their son and apprentice Isaac – plus an armoury of mini earth moving equipment.
“We wouldn’t have got to where we are without OBT,” says Nina. “I cannot recommend them highly enough – it is a weight of worry off our shoulders knowing they handle things. We knew we needed help and supervision from the very start and that’s exactly what we’ve received from Brett and the team.”
Working with OBT has also opened Nat and Nina’s eyes to other issues of running a business.
“Nat needed back surgery and was off work for eight weeks. He’s our bread and butter – if we didn’t have income protection insurance in place I don’t know how we would’ve coped. Because OBT made sure we did, Nat’s back 100 per cent and our business is back to normal.”
“We have piece of mind that our assets are protected. OBT made sure we set up the right business structure when we first appointed them.”
“More recently Brett helped us review our invoicing, debtor management and pricing structure, looking at how our fees are comprised so we can work more effectively with our customers.”
Cash flow is also on the agenda – understanding and managing where cash goes and how that impacts Nat and Nina’s business.
“Thanks to Brett’s experience and input, we have become wiser about how we conduct our business affairs by asking for fees upfront,” says Nina. “We’re aiming to be on the ball rather than just hoping we’ll get paid.”
All these strands of running a better business are coming together and making a difference. Their plumbing business continues to be successful without needing to advertise. Nat and Nina are proud members of their business community and aim to provide excellent customer service.
It sets them up for the next phase of their business when their son Isaac finally qualifies as a plumber, drainer and gas fitter and having two full time tradesmen on the books. Already Nat and Nina are thinking about the outcomes of that, but not without Brett and OBT to help them along the way.
