Back to basics natural approach for future business sale strategy

The first thing that strikes you about Anita Lyne is that she is a woman of principle.

And, just as she makes it her business to nourish Gatton with good food and wellbeing, so does OBT make it theirs to ensure Anita’s business has all the right ingredients to run well.

When taking over well-established Natural Alternative Gatton seven years ago, Anita and OBT had a plan, which involved a ‘back to basics’ strategy. 

“I didn’t want to buy a job,” says Anita. “So, building on our existing relationship with OBT who had looked after our super and finances for so long, suddenly our conversations turned to lifestyle and what I wanted to get out of having my own business.”

“Then Rodney Turner walked me through the switch from employee to entrepreneur. Understanding my special interest in health and wellbeing, Rodney and I scoped out a few businesses for sale in the area.”

Once Anita took ownership of Natural Alternative Gatton in 2007, OBT ensured that she had in place a business plan plus a broader blueprint for her future.

And the back to basic approach kicks in every quarter when Anita and OBT get together to review how her business is performing.

“Essentially we look at the targets the business needs to achieve now to reach an optimal business sale point in the future,” says Anita. “Rodney motivates me and helps me understand what needs to happen for our business to get to that point.”

“I enjoy working hard, but my business means more to me than just having a job,” says Anita. “Knowing we have a 10-year plan makes a huge difference.”

Anita uses the phrase ‘having every base covered’ and OBT makes sure that happens. It translates not only to working on her wealth creation for a comfortable retirement through super, investments and insurances, but also making sure that the business’ tax and accounting are ticking over smoothly for peace of mind.

“Streamlining and automating my business is easy with OBT,” says Anita. “We run our payroll through Cashflow Manager and receive any support on that if we need it.”

“Amanda Goos does our BAS, company returns and my husband’s farm accounting – everything’s done! OBT have our best interests at heart.”

It means the 2010 Business Person of the Year can focus on spending valuable time on the shop floor with customers and not stuck in the back office crunching numbers.

“I always need to be on the lookout and one step ahead of the needs and wants of our customers,” says Anita. “I can make time to do that because OBT keeps me up to date and on the right track.”

“We are working together now so I can reap the rewards in retirement.”

2015 will be another exciting year for Natural Alternative Gatton with the introduction of some new product lines that reinforce Anita’s back to basics philosophy. Anita is acutely aware that, increasingly, people scrutinise what goes in and on their bodies.

“OBT provides an understated service that means, year by year, we are getting closer to achieving the end goal.  But they are not backward in coming forward – Rodney is always thinking about my business and he let’s me know. Because of that, I know my business and my future will be richer for it.”
