When talking Financial Planning with OBT’s Kathy Burnett, she can describe her role any number of ways on any given day, because that’s the nature of small business.
Kathy jokes that she is a Financial Planning chief cook and bottle washer! In reality she covers a wide-ranging number of services as one of the keystones of OBT’s Financial Planning team.
This year marks Kathy’s tenth anniversary with OBT and fourteen years of OBT’s Financial Planning division.
OBT’s Financial Planning division started from scratch when Rodney Turner made a career transition from Accounting to Financial Planning in 2000. Kathy came on board when she left corporate city life behind, opting for a shorter commute and the prospect of being part of a new, exciting opportunity.
Coming to OBT was an extension of Kathy’s client service background.
“With Zurich in Sydney I was lucky to be able to work on both sides of the fence,” says Kathy. “And yet the boutique financial planners in Brisbane were geared to certain niches, so gave me added perspective.”
Kathy and Jill Hayes have formed part of OBT’s Financial Planning team for most of its life. It is very much a case of working together with all hands to the pump to make sure clients’ needs are met.
“The biggest difference about working and living here is that we see our clients both in and out of the office, so we’re used to being accountable,” says Kathy. “Over the years it’s what has given us our unique connection with them.”
At the end of the day, there’s no avoiding death and taxes – something OBT gets to see in tandem.
“We’re here to look after our clients as events occur and lives change,” says Kathy. “Like it or not, insurance claims generate a lot of paperwork. Because I’ve spent so much time in the insurance industry, I’ve liaised between advisers and assessors so can use my expertise to act as a stepping stone whenever matters arise and clients’ circumstances change.”
“I get a lot of satisfaction from doing all the research to find out how and to what extent our clients are covered by insurance, but the key is then explaining that in terms they can comprehend and forming plans to help them move forward in the best ways possible.”
“Our industry never stands still. With Rodney spending a lot of his time out of the office meeting clients, we have to find better ways to communicate and keep things moving. We are now starting to use mobile devices to communicate, which allows us to make the most of technology given the vast area in which our clients are located.”
“I love the client service grounding that Zurich provided. With Rodney and Brett running such a good business with a long-standing team, now being part of our Financial Planning team means I can apply my experience in a number of ways to help create the best outcomes for OBT clients.”
