The Lockyer Farmers United board of directors approved the construction of a cannery near Grantham last week.
The cannery will employ up to 70 local workers and will provide more certainty to local vegetable growers.
“Our goal as a company is that everything that we build, everything that we acquire, wherever possible will be the Lockyer Valley or the greater Brisbane region, and that we’ll only buy equipment and materials from elsewhere if we have no other choice,” said spokesman Colin Dorber.
“The reality is that a modern, technologically superior cannery and processing facility, purpose-built, is clearly viable and clearly profitable.”
With construction set to begin in three months, Mayor Steve Jones says the decision is a huge step forward for the region and gives certainty to local producers.
OBT Director Rodney Turner added, “It’s great news for our region and good for employment. We’re looking forward to seeing the flow on effect to local business.”
