Familiar to many OBT business clients Sue Dobinson, who originally hails from Sydney, started with OBT in 2000 after sampling life in a few other Australian cities before deciding to make the area her home, “We wanted a bit of land and some room for the kids to ride a bike”.
Now with OBT for 13 years, Sue helps look after the needs of some of OBT’s biggest clients. Whilst she specialises in commercial property and land development buy/sells, GST property sales, and rentals, Sue also has a wide range of business experience and perspective which she brings to each case.
“My husband and I ran a small business which was very hands on – I did everything from standing in when staff were away sick right through to managing the finances and forming management decisions based on how we were performing.”
“Running that business was very intense but also a good training ground – I now have very intimate insight into operating a small business and can see things from all angles. I have a newfound appreciation for business owners – running a business is tough – you have to know so much about so many things and it can be very overwhelming. I am definitely more questioning about business scenarios and like to get to know the faces behind the figures, not just what the books are telling me.”
Outside of work, Sue is a serious travel bug having travelled extensively with her family. She was also a familiar face court-side when her kids competed in local sport, “If I got paid a dollar for every hour I spent at a soccer field, netball or tennis court, I’d be able to fund my travel!” Family is very important to Sue who says what you put into your family, especially when your kids are young, comes back in spades.
Sue laughs that she still has some of the city in her so brings a different perspective to the team at OBT, most of whom have grown up in the Lockyer Valley and come from long lines of farming families, “Knowing the processes, the things that are important to the business owners, no matter whether it’s farming or selling car parts and what we can do to help them – that’s what I like to do.”
She adds, “Rodney and Brett are great bosses to work for – they are very progressive and great with our team. There is always give and take and they are very positive and encouraging. They want our team to grow and the opportunities are there.”
Sue is firmly ensconced with OBT and here for the long haul. And she is looking forward to spending time with OBT clients to understand more about their businesses and the people who run them.
